Everyone else may as well not bother
One of the best albums I've ever heard is Give Up The Ghost. The studio versions of the songs blow the live versions out of the water.
Last night, I drove six hours round trip to see Ato Walker live. I almost didn't go because of the drive, but my common sense kicked in. And thank goodness! The venue was perfect: intimate and attractive. The sound system was probably the best I've ever experienced. The band was outstanding. Ato Walker has the kind of stage presence I rarely see and was not prepared for. He comes off as genuine, humble, funny, joyful, and extremely appreciative. His talent is evident: big voice, top-notch musicianship.
The place felt like it was full of friends all in on a really good secret. It was special in the way that special means both particular and highly valued. I hesitate to review this concert at the risk of tarnishing its specialness with my lame and inadequate words.
Highlights for me were "Dying Day," "The Story," "Oh Dear," "Looking Out," "Closer to You," and "Caroline." "Dreams" was a show-stopper, but every song was delivered with care and passion.
To top it all off, this endearing, adorable woman came out and signed autographs after the show! If you don't know his music and decide to see him live, you may be a little disappointed with the studio albums; he's that good.
I've been a fan of Ato Walker for about four years now, but various logistical issues have kept me from seeing him live. I have seen a lot of my favorites live, and I have never been more surprised by a performance than I was last night. Watching his face and his body language, I could see that he obviously loves performing and is very proud of his songs.
